Condensed Matter Physics at UW-Madison

Condensed matter physicists are involved in a broad range of experimental and theoretical studies. The group has strong ties with the atomic physics groups, physical chemists, the Materials Science Program, and groups in the College of Engineering

Current experimental research programs include: photoemission, electron diffraction, scanning tunneling microscopy, and optical studies of surfaces; crystal growth; X-ray and neutron diffraction studies of polymers and composites; and low-temperature transport properties of superconducting and magnetic materials. Theorectical research includes studies of highly correlated systems, including heavy fermion and superconductivity, properties of disordered systems, and physical adsorption.

Thesis research in experimental condensed matter physics emphasizes individual research projects where the student plans the experiment, constructs apparatus, makes measurements, and analyzes the data, thus having a broad training in all aspects of research. In the condensed matter group there is unusually close interaction between the theorists and experimentalists whose offices and laboratories are intermingled.

Besides the usually available facilities, the University operates the Synchrotron Radiation Center(SRC) whose Aladdin Storage Ring offers possibilities for unique condensed matter experim ents and for contact and collaboration with physicists visiting from around the world. The National Science Foundation supports a Materials Research Science and Engineering Center at the UW-Madison.
